11,710 Nigerian students studying in US- Consul John Bray
The United States Consul General in Lagos, Mr. F. John Bray has disclosed that
there are 11,710 students from Nigeria currently studying in the United States.
Speaking in Lagos on Tuesday, July 17 at the pre-departure orientation for Nigerian students heading to U.S. to study, Consul Bray stated that students from Nigeria attend about 800 institutions in each of its 50 states.
He noted that out of this number, 49.5 percent are undergraduate; 36.2percent are graduate students, 2percent are non-degree candidates, while the remaining 12.3percent are on optional practical training.
Compared to last year, he said this represents a 9.7 percent increase.
Consul Bray pointed out that the number of Nigerians studying in the United States has been going up for the past seven years.
He disclosed that about 250 student-members of the Lagos EducationUSA Center studying at U.S. institutions in the fall of 2018, have received scholarships from U.S. institutions totaling over $4 million to date.
Consul Bray stated further that one 12th grader got a full ride scholarship to Harvard to study Political Science, while
many of the graduate students with whom EducationUSA worked were admitted to fully funded doctoral programs in the STEM fields.
He said that six Opportunity Fund Program grantees will be going for their fully funded PhD programs in STEM fields.
Consul Bray noted that one major reason for the increase of Nigerian students in the U.S. is the value they place on quality education.
He said that accredited U.S. colleges and universities provide a quality education.
The US Consul stated that the most popular state is Texas, with 1,540 students, while the most popular college/university is Houston Community College, with 220 students.
In his word: “Whether you are interested in a large school or small school, a school in a rural or urban setting, or you want to study in a hot or cold climate, the United States has a school for you”.
He explained that EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 425 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries that promotes U.S. higher education to students around the world by offering accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at one of the 4,700+ accredited post secondary institutions in the United States.
The US Envoy told the students that they will be joining more than one million international students in the United States.
He said 35,364 of the students come from Sub-Saharan Africa, and Nigeria ranks 1st in the region and 12th in the world as a sending country.
