Armed robbers raid Diamond, Finbank, Access banks in Lagos
….As Police recovers over N27m, 240 7.62mm live ammunition
The resurgence of armed robbery in Lagos has continued unabated with Tuesday’s armed robbery attacks on Diamond, Finbank and Access banks in Festac area of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Nigerianfranknew.com learnt that the armed robbers stormed the banks through the canal around Fourth Avenue Festac in speed boats, dressed in Military camouflage and blew up the security doors of Diamond, Finbank and Access banks and carted away huge amount of money.
The robbers who scarred people away with sporadic gunshots, gained entrance into the premises of the banks unchallenged.
In the process a mother and her two year old daughter were killed in the raid by stray bullets, while scores were injured.
Residents of the area stated that the Police came only when the bandits had left the area.
It was gathered that the robbers who stormed the area at about 7:30am, held customers and residents hostage for over two hours and escaped unhurt.
About Three months, another group of armed robbers laid siege in two Banks in Ikorodu area of Lagos, carting away huge amount of money. Some of the robbers were later caught in different parts of the country.
The resurgence of armed robbery in Lagos is now becoming a source of concern to Lagosians.
Meanwhile, the Police said it had recovered over 27 million naira and 240 of 7.62mm live ammunition abandoned by the robbers after a fierce gun battle with the Police
The Police in their statement explained, “that the Area ‘E’ and the Divisional Police Headquarters both at Festac Town received information of sporadic shootings at 4th Avenue Festac Town, Lagos. In a swift reaction, the Area Commander, Area ‘E’ mobilized a joint Team of Area ‘E’ and Divisional Headquarters, Festac that engaged the Armed robbers numbering over 40, dressed in military Camouflage and armed with military assault rifles of various calibre robbing Access and Diamond Banks simultaneously.”
The Police explained further that, “the gun battle forced the armed robbers to abandon over Twenty Seven Million Naira and Two Hundred and Forty Rounds (240) of 7.62mm live ammunition. No life was lost on both sides.
According to the statement, “the case has been referred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad for discreet investigation while security has been beefed up within Festac Town and its environs. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State wishes to reassure the residents of Lagos of their safety and urge them to go about their normal business as he has vowed to stop at nothing in unraveling the perpetrators of this heinous crime.”
