$5.2b NCC fine: MTN boss resigns
As Phuthuma Nhleko takes over as Executive Chairman
Sifiso Dabengwa, chief executive of MTN mobile company has resigned over the $5.2 billion fine imposed on the company by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for failing to deactivate 5.1-million unregistered SIM cards on its network.
According to the company, a non executive chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko had agreed to act as executive chairman for a maximum period of six months while the company try to identify a successor for Mr Dabengwa.
Dabengwa, tendered his resignation with immediate effect, saying it was “in the interest of the company and its shareholders”.
Sifiso Dabengwa was the group president and chief executive officer of MTN group Limited until November 2015. Prior to joining the MTN Group in 1999, where he held various jobs before he became Chief Executive Officer.
Dabengwa holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, an MBA and EDP.
