Beninoise jailed 9 months for trafficking in Marijuana

Justice Sule Hassan of a Federal High Court in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, this morning sentenced a citizen of Republic of Benin, Fambo Danji, to nine months imprisonment for unlawful dealing in 10 kliograms of Marijuana.
The convict, an indigene of Coufo Village, Republic of Benin, according to the National Drugs Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) prosecutor, Mr. Aliyu Abubakar, was arrested on December 1, 2015, along Idiroko-Sango Otta road, with the said prohibited ‘weed’, which he imported from the Republic of Benin to Nigeria.
He was arraigned before the court on March 4, 2016, on a count charge of unlawful dealing in Marijuana, the offence according to the prosecutor is contrary to and punishable under 11(a) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Upon the arraignment, the convict had pleaded guilty to the count charge.
During the review of the fact of the offence, the prosecutor, had tendered the seized prohibited ‘weed’, the convict’s confessional statement, witness’s statement, drug analysis form and others which were admitted as exhibit by the court.
Sentencing the convict today, Justice Hassan stated that the prosecution has been able to prove its case against the convict beyond every reasonable doubt.
Consequently, the judge sentenced the convict to nine months imprisonment.
The judge stated that sentencing of the convict will serve as deterrent to others who may want to engage in the same act.
Justice Hassan however ordered that the term of the convict’s sentence will commence from the time of his arrest.
The judge also ordered that the drug be destroyed after 90 days of the judgement if there is no any appeal against the judgment. Adding that the destruction of the marijuana should be jointly monitor by NDLEA and Court officials.
