2021 Akwaaba: NIHOTOUR DG calls for strengthening of synergies amongst employers, training providers, stakeholders
The director general of the National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism, NIHOTOUR, Alhaji Nura Kangiwa has called for the strengthening of synergies amongst all employers, training providers and related stakeholders to develop a new training package for sustainable quality training and tourist destination service culture.
Kangiwa observed that addressing training issues to scale the Nigeria’s hospitality industry to international standards is most desirable.
He stated that this is necessary considering the high volume of demand for its services and huge volume of investments in the sector.
Kangiwa also stressed the need to rejig and re-engineer the training package across all forms of the training structures to close the disconnects and bridge the gaps between the industry’s experiences and the training providers’ skilled deliveries to meet job requirements in various career disciplines.
In his paper presentation at the recently concluded Akwaaba African Travel Market in Lagos, Kangiwa who was represented by a lecturer at the hospitality institute, Mr Phillip Egga Maga emphasised the need for adequate training resources to match the curricular of professional programmes, while making trainee’s contact with the workplace more frequent.
Kangiwa also called for the strengthening of synergies amongst all employers, training providers and related stakeholders to develop a new training package for sustainable quality training and tourist destination service culture.
He listed the way forward for hospitality training to include synergies between Hospitality industry players to harmonise training curricular involving national and MNCs corporations, training institutions, Sector Skills Council, employers, professional bodies, trade unions, related public agencies and academia.
To bridge curriculum gaps for industry fit and development to cover Nigeria tourism and hospitality education landscape and curriculum assessments; skills debate in hospitality and tourism; student industrial work experience and perception of key industry players.
Improve on individual trainee’s generic skills with National Occupational Standards, create fora for prospective trainees, trainers, employers and stakeholders to produce standard occupational curriculum, sector players synergy with NIHOTOUR/ Hospitality and Tourism Sector Skills Council of Nigeria (HTSSCN) to strengthen learning standards on occupational trades from informal to formal education and training.
Others are to address issues of MNCs in Hospitality services on Indigenous transfer of Technology (NOTAP, ITF, NDE, NIHOTOUR, SON)
Regulation of hospitality industry operations through Acts to regulate industry personnel
Build capacity by training and development of Hospitality occupational trades manpower
NIHOTOUR initiative to engage MNC managers as career models, mentorship and influencers to trainees
Initiating international training programmes with industry specific generic skills deliveries (IATA programmes at NIHOTOUR).
Representation of Concepts in Human Resources Management, strategies for Bridging the Issues of Curriculum Gap for Industry Fit and Development.
