United Nigeria Airlines receives IATA certificate, set to connect Ghana, plans UK, Italy, Dubai, USA
.. As IATA calls for clear line of Forex support to aviation industry in Nigeria
United Nigeria Airlines on Thursday, October 19th received the International Air Transport Association, IATA, membership certificate in Lagos with plans to connect Ghana soon.
Speaking while receiving the membership certificate at its office at the General Kenneth Minimah Estate in Lagos, the airline Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer, Professor Obiorah Okonkwo disclosed that the airline also has plans to fly to the UK, Italy, Dubai and USA.
Prof Okonkwo while thanking IATA for having their back, said with the relationship a lot more benefit will come.
He commended the Nigerian Airline Operators for being patriotic and resilient in the face of daunting and difficult operating environment.
Okonkwo said United Nigeria Airlines is committed in meeting international standards and also growing the country’s GDP .
On the number of aircraft requirements by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, United Nigeria boss stated that the number of aircraft should not be the issue, but the operating environment that will enable the airlines grow.
While thanking the NCAA for the regulatory oversight of the industry, Okonkwo noted that airline business models should be the perogative of the airlines and not that of the regulator.
The AON spokesperson said the solution should not be on the number of aircraft an airline needs to have, but the airport infrastrural defeceits, like the size of the apron for aircraft to park.
He emphasised the need to expand the airport to accommodate other players who may want to venture into the business tomorrow, adding that if the operators expand their operations tomorrow by adding about 100 new aircraft, the airport will no longer be adequate in terms of space to accommodate the growth.
United Nigeria Airlines boss explained that the major causes of flight delays and cancellation can no longer be blamed on the airline operators but on infrastructural defeceits at the airport, adding that though 2 to 3 percent of the causes of flight delays and cancellations can be traced to airline operators.
Okonkwo lamented that aircraft are underutilized in Nigeria because of issues of sunset airports as aircraft that suppose to do 18 hours in a day do far less than that due to sunset airports in the country.
He expressed optimism that the Minister of aviation will address the issue of murtiple designation given to foreign airlines to operate into two or more cities in the country.
United Nigeria Airlines boss said the issue of code sharing and interlining is been harmonised by the airline with other local and foreign airlines.
He lauded the airline team for doing a good job in growing the airline within a short period.
Okonkwo said though the airline is still working on its plan to establish Maintenance , Repair and Overhaul, MRO, facilities, pointed out that they are still waiting for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN to allocate land to them to begin the project.
Speaking while handing the membership plaque to United Nigeria Airlines CEO, IATA’s Area Manager, West and Central Africa, Dr. Samson Fatokun called for a clear line of Forex support for the aviation industry in Nigeria.
Fatokun decried that the impact of the scarcity of Forex is more acute in the aviation industry in Nigeria.
He noted that the federal government IE Window is iluquid, stressing that there must be a help for the industry.
There must be a help for the aviation industry in Nigeria and the Nigerian government must provide that help, access to Forex is key to that help, Fatokun said.
Explaining why availability of dollars is a necessity for the business, Fatokun stated that the aviation business in conducted in dollars, as maintenance, purchase or aircraft spares, leasing are all done in dollars.
While congratulating the airline for achieving this feat within a short period, Fatokun noted that safety is IATA number one priority in the aviation industry.
He pointed out that this is why airlines that becomes IATA members havr to pass through the IATA Operational Safety Audit, IOSA registry.
Speaking also, the team from Embear commended United Nigeria Airlines for the IATA membership.
The duo assured the airline of the aircraft manufacturers support always.
