NANTA 2024 AGM: Keyamo assures Nigeria’s airlines of support to break new grounds

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo has assured that the Ministry under his leadership would continue to ensure that Nigeria’s airlines break new grounds to make air travels safe and convenient for her citizens.
In his keynote address at the ongoing 48th Annual General Meeting, AGM of the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies, NANTA, in Lagos, Keyamo who was represented by Mr. Hassan Ejibunu, a Director in the Ministry stated that his Ministry has taken the necessary step to review all the subsisting Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) that Nigeria has entered into with other countries of the world.
He explained that the aim is to ensure that the country benefits from the principle of reciprocity which is the hallmark of all BASAs.
In the words of Keyamo: “This is to ensure that our local domestic carriers designated to fly international routes operates effortlessly without encumbrances, so that our citizens can benefit maximally. The outcome of this strategic move would not only improve connectivity, but also position Nigeria as a regional hub for air transportation.
This also would undoubtedly have impact on NANTA’s members business growth”.
Commenting on the successful commencement of direct flight to London by one of Nigeria’s domestic carriers, Messrs. Air Peace Airline, Keyamo noted that the success of the flight operations, coming after seven years, signifies the determination of the Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to continue to promote the interests of Nigeria’s entrepreneurs to ensure they blossom in their businesses.
He said , “the foray of Air Peace on the London route has changed the game for the benefits of Nigeria.
The Ministry under my leadership would continue to ensure that Nigeria’s airlines break new grounds to make air travels safe and convenient for her citizens.
We control the market in Africa and we are the most travelled in the African Continent. Therefore, we deserved the best”.
The Minister commended the commitment and sagacity of Chief Allen Onyema, Chairman/CEO of Air Peace and his management team for that enviable feat and accomplishment.
While appreciating the 3000 NANTA’s corporate entity members across the country, for being at the forefront of driving positive change and fostering unity within the industry, Keyamo said the organization’s tradition of bringing together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds under one roof is a testament of its commitment to advancing the interests of the travel industry in Nigeria and beyond.
“Your recent support and campaign slogan ‘fly our own’ in support of Air Peace is well noted and appreciated. Therefore, I urge each and every one of you to actively engage in the discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities that this AGM and Exhibition has to offer. Let us seize this moment to share insights, exchange ideas, and collaborate on innovative strategies that will not only bolster your businesses but also catalyse growth in the realms of travel, tourism, business, trade, and investments both within and beyond the African continent, he said.
The Minister stated that the introduction of the Maiden Edition of Inter-Africa Travel and Trade Exhibition in this year’s AGM is novel as it signifies the commencement of a biennial Africa -focused Exhibition that will be hosted by NANTA to ignite inter and intra-Africa business, investment and trade through the instrumentality of travel and tourism.
Commending NANTA for taking the lead in Africa and for its Afro-centric idea in linking travel and tourism amongst the African states, the Minister congratulated the leadership and members of NANTA for their unwavering commitment and determination to see to the advancement of tourism in Nigeria and the entire African continent, as tourism has great potential to contribute to the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of the country and continent.
He said: “The theme of this year’s AGM and Exhibition “Unlocking Africa’s Economic Potential: Travel and Tourism as Catalyst for Intra-Africa Business, Investment and Trade,” is very apt as it is sync with the visionary thought of African leaders to integrate and facilitate trade and investment among the 55 countries of the African Union and eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in the continent, through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). AfCFTA is the world’s largest free trade area which objective includes free movement of people and capital. With a combined GDP of an estimated US$3.4 trillion, the pact links 1.4 billion people living in different parts of the continent.”
Keyamo explained that the underlying objectives behind the creation of AfCTFA cannot be totally achieved without the contribution of Associations like NANTA in the continent, as they facilitate the movement of people, goods and services.
He said the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and NANTA are partners in progress as both have the same Mission of ensuring the growth of civil aviation that will impact positively on the travelling Nigerians.
The cooperation and understanding of NANTA during the issue of ‘trapped funds’ of foreign airlines operating into and out of Nigeria is well appreciated.
The dexterity of NANTA members to remain in business, despite the unfavourable conditions at that time should be commended, the Minister stated.
Keyamo assured Nigerians that the present administration is determined to change the narrative for good in the Aviation Sector in Nigeria.
On assumption of duty as the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, we came up with a 5-Point Agenda aimed at accelerating the existing Aviation’s Road Map envisioned to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and better service delivery.
According to him, the 5 Point Agenda which are in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President are to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and continuous upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by ICAO. Support for the growth and sustenance of local businesses whilst holding them to the highest international standard in the aviation industry.
Improvement of infrastructures in the aviation industry.
Development of human capacity within the industry and optimising revenue generation for the Federal Government.
In actualizing the 5-Point Agenda , Keyamo said the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development under his leadership has taken some strategic policy interventions for the economic growth of the aviation sector.
Keyamo explained that ” of recent, I led a delegation to France on a Business Forum to discuss with leading French institutions and companies in civil aviation on infrastructural development of the aviation sector of Nigeria. The delegation met with officials of Airbus and ATR on how to make aircraft leasing more accessible to members of the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON). Airbus and ATR are involved in the manufacturing of aircraft that are famously used by Nigerian Airline Operators for local and international operations. The mission was successful as the outcome would soon become visible to all”.
Keyamo pointed out that the acquisition of more fleets by Nigerian carriers for international operations would impact positively on the businesses and operations of NANTA members.
