Kwara seeks collaborations with stakeholders to drive tourism agenda forward – Gov. Abdulrazaq
The Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has disclosed that the state is actively seeking collaborations with local, national, and international stakeholders to drive its tourism agenda forward.
Speaking at the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators’ Annual General Meeting, AGM, and Conference in Ilorin on Thursday July 18, 2024, with the theme “Tourism as a Catalyst for Progress, Peace and Partnership,
Governor AbdulRazaq stated that these partnerships will help the state share best practices, attract investment, and create a thriving tourism ecosystem.
The Governor re-stated the state government’s commitment to harnessing the potential of tourism to uplift their communities and build a more inclusive and prosperous society.

said the State Government has initiated several projects aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing the visitors experience to further boost tourism and hospitality.
He noted that tourism is a critical driver of economic growth and social development as It creates jobs, stimulates local economies, and fosters cultural exchange.
The Governor said the state understand that the safety and security of their visitors are paramount and as a result, has implemented robust measures to ensure a secure environment for all tourists.
This includes routine security checks and patrols, and collaborations with local communities to maintain peace and stability, the Governor said.
Governor Abdulrazaq noted that since sustainability is at the core of their tourism strategy, the government is dedicated to promoting eco-friendly practices and preserving its natural resources for future generations.
According to him: “Innovation is also key, and we are constantly exploring new ways to enhance the tourism experience through technology and creative solutions. This is where our Innovation Hub comes in.
We believe that partnerships are essential for the growth of our tourism sector. ”
He pointed out that
tourism is more than just a source of revenue for Kwara State; because it is a catalyst for progress, peace, and partnership.
Governor Abdulrazaq said by celebrating its cultural heritage and creating welcoming spaces for tourists, they are building a brighter future for their state.
The Governor said the State Government has a clear and ambitious goal for its tourism, creative, and hospitality sector, to celebrate its rich cultural heritage, present viable recreational investment opportunities that support the diverse players within this vibrant sector, and make Kwara the go-to place for holidays, conferences, and recreation.
He explained that by highlighting its cultural wealth and natural beauty as well as investing in critical facilities, they can create an inclusive and prosperous environment for all stakeholders.
In his words, “Kwara State is blessed with numerous tourist attractions that offer a unique and enriching experience to visitors. These include the Asa Dam, notable as the source of potable drinking water for the Kwara community, source of irrigation water for farming, fisheries, livestock development; the Esie Museum, home to fascinating stone images discovered in the 17th century, believed to be human beings turned to stone; Sobi Hill, a historic site offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape; Okuta Ilorin, a significant landmark in the state’s capital; and Mungo Park Monument, a tribute to the famous explorer.”
He listed others to include the Ilorin Central Mosque, an architectural marvel and a place of worship; the Aviation College, Ilorin, an institution for aviation training, the Garment Factory, which is the largest in the country, Institute of Contemporary African Art & Film, or the visual arts centre, the Sugar Film Factory, and Ilorin International Conference Centre.
According to the Governor, these also include natural wonders like Owu Waterfalls, the serene Patigi Beach, and the rich tradition of pottery at Dada Pottery which further enhance the state’s appeal.
He listed others to include, the construction of roadworks to Owu Waterfall, making this beautiful site more accessible to tourists, and the ongoing construction of a motel at Regatta, Patigi, providing comfortable accommodation for visitors.
He disclosed that the recently commissioned Flower Garden in Ilorin has transformed from a notorious criminal hideout into a vibrant recreational park.
Governor Abdulrazaq said this project aims to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors.
He noted that every local government in the state is blessed with at least two tourist attraction sites.
To further boost tourism and hospitality, the Governor stated that the government has initiated several projects aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing the visitor experience.
