Africa needs to buy, sell with each other- Esayas, ET MD

The managing director of International Services of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr. Esayas WoldeMariam Hailu, has stressed the need for Africans to buy and sell with each other.

Esayas Hailu woldemariam put Africa’s business transaction  with other oversea countries at 90 per cent while only 10 per cent is for Africa.

Speaking in an interview with Nigeria Journalists recently at the Airline’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, the MD maintained  that: “African has been transacting 90 percent business with overseas countries while only 10 per cent for Africa, why?  Africa needs to buy and sell with each other. We need to do business with ourselves.”

He noted that in some places people go from one part of Africa to another part of Africa via Dubai, Doha.

Esayas Hailu woldemariam lamented that even some African countries are given 5th Freedom traffic right to non African carriers to pick passengers and disembark within the continent of Africa without having to go through the home base, but that when such request is coming from a fellow African carrier, some African countries hesitate or disallow.

He said: “In some places people go from one part of Africa to another part of Africa via Dubai, Doha, Why?  And for what reason. Even some African countries are given 5th Freedom traffic right to non African carriers to pick passengers and disembark within the continent of Africa without having to go through the home base, but when such request is coming from a fellow African carrier, some African countries hesitate or disallow”.

He noted that Africa needs to liberalize its sky if the full potential of African carriers are to be unleashed.
“We believe that Africa needs to liberalize its sky if the full potential of African carriers are to be unleashed. Open sky policy is in the best interests of African airlines as it boosts their efficiency by reducing the high operational costs such as high airfares and airport charges. Liberalized airspace will also help strengthen collaboration among the carriers towards claiming the market share they deserve,” the MD said.

Ethiopian Airline boss stated that  Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) is very good solution for Africa airlines.

He said SAATM is the best thing that can  ever happen to Africa because air transport connectivity is the fuel for economy and cultural exchange, adding that people going and coming, create regional and cultural tourism as well as people and goods  and economic transactions.

He enjoined Africans to put their heads together and organise their air transport and make it thrive.

Esayas Hailu woldemariam said B777X could be a great aircraft, and that the airline is evaluating it as possible replacement for the existing 777 fleet

Commenting on whether the airline would recommence operations with B737 MAX If certified by FAA, the MD pointed out that the problem with the design of the flight control system of the B737 MAX and its redesign is under review by regulatory bodies and stakeholders.
He added that, “currently we can’t comment on the resumption of operation of the fleet type. But as we said previously, if we resume operating the B737 MAX, we will be the last airline to do so”.
