President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the former Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund as the new Chairman of the Independent national Electoral Commission, INEC.
The appointment of Mahmood, a Professor of Political History and International Studies was approved by the Council of State which met Wednesday in Abuja.
This development was announced by the Sokoto State Governor, Rt Hon Aminu Tambuwal at the State House after a meeting with President Buhari’s appointment.
Governor Tambuwal said the appointment Professor Yakubu as new Chairman of INEC was in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
He added that Acting Chairman, Amina Zakari now becomes the INEC Commissioner representing the North-West.
Professor Yakubu also served as the Assistant Secretary, Finance and Administration of the 2014 National Conference.
Yakubu is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism.
