President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sum of 10 billion Naira for an Intervention fund for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
President Buhari while approving the fund said he has the assurance of the minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika that the work will be done speedily and to the highest standards.
The president in his official tweet handle stated that: “I have approved the sum of 10 billion Naira for an Intervention fund for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. I have the assurance of the Minister of Aviation that the work will be done speedily and to the highest standards”.
The president message on the approval of fund for Enugu Airport renovation reads further: “Even as we have many items competing for our limited resources, we will continue to prioritize infrastructure investments in every part of the country. It is our responsibility to ensure Nigeria’s infrastructure is fixed; we will keep doing this.”
The approval of the fund is not unconnected with the request of the South East Governors and leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for a special funding to speedily complete the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), shut down since August.
The chairman of the South-East Governors Forum and Ebonyi Governor, Dave Umahi who led the delegation, including President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, to meet with the President asked the President to declare a state of emergency on roads and erosion in the region.
In the words of Governor Umahi: “We are here to kindly urge Mr. President to approve special fund for the Akanu Ibiam Airport just like what was done for Abuja Airport,” he said, adding that the closure of the Enugu airport, coupled with the nightmarish condition of the roads, had grounded activities in the region and causing great hardship and misery on the people.
