A non governmental organisation, Committee on Defence of Human Right CDHR has staged a peaceful rally to demand that the federal government should find a lasting solution to the electricity problem and also to stop corruption.
The rally which was held in Ibadan recently took off from the University of Ibadan main gate, as the protesters marched through Samonda, Sango Mokola and terminated at the government secretariat where they presented a letter to the President through the office of the governor of Oyo state.
In the letter the CDHR expressed concern over the state of electricity and fuel supply in the country, noting that: “ The CDHR wishes to equivocally assert that the declining state of electricity in the country is unacceptable as Nigerians can no longer be denied the fundamental right to free movement and social justice we therefore demand that an uninterrupted access to energy and power by Nigerian be handles as issues of National emergency”.
“We want the federal government to use part of the recovered stolen funds to solve the electricity problem rather than pilling it up for a purpose that is not known’
Equally, we call for judicial inquiries into the recent failings in these two critical areas that hinge on the daily lives and routines of Nigeria with the view to identifying the fundamental problems and proffering solution”, body stated.
CDHR also applauded the commitment demonstrated by the President Buhari led administration in exposing corrupt activities by the last administration and urged him to institutionalize anti corruption crusade.
Expressing fear on the way corruption cases is being handled, the group said, “ there are yet serious concerns that the war against corruption may end up in a circus show without clearly defined strategy including the ongoing criminal prosecution”.
The CDHR said it “considers abandoned corruption cases, which abound in Nigeria today utterly reprehensible and inconsistent with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians who are overwhelmingly in support of the fight against corruption as currently executed by the EFCC in particular.
We demand that that the anti corruption crusade be pursued with the desired vigour and independence in line with public interest”.
The Deputy governor of Oyo state Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo who recieved the letter on behalf of the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi said though it is understandable that people are not happy with the situation in the country, particularly on the issue of electricity, but assured Nigerians that changes will come with time
He maintained that the president is not relenting in his effort to effect positive changes in Nigeria as promised, adding that soon things will begin to take shape.
He however promised to deliver the message to the president
