A Federal High Court in Lagos presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris on Friday sentenced a 47 year-old, Nnamdi Adinaze, to 36 months imprisonment for dealing in Cannabis Sativa, popularly called Marijuana.
The judge sentenced the convict after the National Drugs Laws and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) prosecutor, Mr. Jeremiah Aernan, presented the fact of the court one count Charge of unlawful dealing in narcotic leveled against the convict.
Aernan while review the fact of the charge, informed the court that the 47 years old convict was arrested on August 2, 2016, at Abattoir area of Agege, with 1.8Â kilograms of weed suspected to be marijuana.
He further informed the court that upon conducting test analysis on the suspected weeds, it tested positive to be banned Cannabis Sativa.
During the reviewing of the fact of the charge, the prosecutor tendered the seized Cannabis sativa, the convict’s statement, certificate of test analysis, and other documents, which were admitted by the court as exhibits.
The convict had pleaded to a count charge of unlawful dealing in banned weeds.
The charge marked FHC/L/382c/16, reads in part: “that you Nnamdi Adianze, 47, on or about August 2, 2016, at Abattoir area of Agege, Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court, without lawful authority dealt in 1.8 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic similar to Cocaine, Heroine and LSD, and thefore committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(c) of the National Drugs Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act. Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004”.
Upon the review of the charge couppled with the plea of the convict, the prosecutor, though informed the courturged the court to sentence the convict accordingly.
But the convict in hia allocutor, pleaded with court to tamper justice with mercy in sentencing him.
Consequently, the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, in his judgement, sentenced the convict to three years imprisonment with hard labour, and advised him to use his years in prison to turn a new leave.
