Dr Onyibe urges African leaders to approach America on tariff renegotiation

Two times former commissioner in Delta State and an international public affairs analyst and Commonwealth Institute Scholar, Dr Magnus Onyibe, has called on African leaders to approach America under the leadership of President Donald Thrum for tariff renegotiation like Mexico did.

Dr Onyibe said he expects the African Union to approach the US for adjustment in tariff so as to address the African problems.

Speaking recently during the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS) Symposium on the Theme: Trump 2.0 and Africa: Dangers and prospects, Onyibe likened President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to President Donald Trump of the United States of America saying he will be better for Nigeria on the long run .

He said President Tinubu’s policies will be much appreciated later when they begin to yield the desired results, adding that every policy takes time to mature as their impact may not be felt immediately.

Onyibe lauded Tinubu’s policy on nationalism with his Nigeria first policy which is aimed at patronising Nigerian made products first .

He said the National Orientation Agency, NOA is not leaving up to expectations in this regards.

Onyibe noted that Africa will be better for the second coming of Trump .

According to him, Trump is an unconventional world leader changing the old world order and does not see Africa as a threat to America in any way .

He explained that under the last administration of President Joe Biden, American was doing a whole lot of things probono like the Russia, Ukraine war, but that when Trump came to power, he has to renegotiate the agreement so that America will have some thing to benefit from their support to Ukraine.

Onyibe said Trump is not the first American President that tried to bring manufacturing from China back to America.

Onyibe said Trump has achieved reduction of illegal immigrants into the US.

He noted that 50 years after, Thrump is reversing the China trend by trying to bring back manufacturing from China to America which the country has earlier benefitted from due to its high capacity in electricity generation which was a problem for them so many years ago.

He stated that if the US has to consider bringing their manufacturing to Africa, there will be the challenge of electricity.

He added that in this situation, Elon Musk Battery Energy which has been tested in Australia maybe of help to Africa incase the continent decide to approach him for help.

In his contribution , Professor Anthony Kila, Institute Director General at Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS),
observed that Trump new order is in total contrast to the old order which is against collaboration and interdependence .

Prof Kila said the with the new world order, America is now taking the back stage as Canadian and Singaporean Prime Ministers are now emerging world leaders.

He explained that even at that, President Trump is neither appreciated in America and abroad.

Kila said Singapore is working hard now to open more business mission in Africa
