Crisis is said to be brewing in the Gbagura land, an Egbaland of Ogun State over the refusal of one of the indigenes to take over the worship of the traditional deity of the town, the Agbo deity.
Trouble in the rustic kingdom started after the demise of the priestess of the Agbo deity. As a tradition of the kingdom, the daughter of the priestess, Adelaja Bukola Funmilayo, a married woman with two children, was expected to take over from the late mother, the priestess. But despite all entreaties and subtle threat by the elder and worshippers of Agbo deity, the daughter of the late priestess has refused to come and take over the position of her mother as expected by the tradition of the kingdom, claiming that she was a born-again, and as such it was against her religion to engage in idolatry like the worship of the local deity.
However, the traditional worshippers are insisting that her new faith does not preclude her from carrying out her traditional role as her refusal habours grave repercussion for the people of Gbagura.
Speaking to NigerianFrankNews, one of the worshippers, Mr. Esubiyi Shopeju said: “I don’t understanding why young people of now think they are wiser than their parents, our ancestor. The mother of Funmilayo was our priestess and served the deity until she passed to our ancestors. Now, this young woman is called upon, as demanded by tradition, to fulfill her role and she is refusing. Who does she expect to come and do her work? She has to fulfill her role to the community and there is no two ways about.”
NigerianFranknews made efforts to speak with the lady at the centre of the storm but she was said to have disappeared with her family for fear of being harmed by the traditionalists.
Agbo Agura Deity is the main source of protection in Gbagura land and the entire Gbagura people are expecting the new priestess to come back home and start performing the spiritual rights to restore peace and divine direction to their Land as the Chosen one.
The Agbo Agura deity is mysterious and only accept blood sacrifices which against Christian doctrine.
