LSWRC urges ATWAP to become LASG watchdog on water regulation, as association begins quality assurance
The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC) has urged the Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria, ATWAP, to become its watchdog and Ambassador in ridding the industry of quacks and producers of sub standard products in the state.
This is coming just as the Water Producers Association under the leadership of Mrs Clementina Chinwe Ativie has flagged off water quality assurance for Lagosians.
Speaking in Alausa, Lagos on Monday during a stakeholders meeting between the State Water Regulatory Commission and Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria, the executive secretary of LSWRC, Mrs Funke Femi Adepoju stated that the essence of the watchdog role for the association is to save their businesses by collaborating with the regulatory body to rid the industry of quacks, thereby making water safe in the state.
She disclosed that the state government has approved a mobile laboratory for the commission, to serve as check Laboratory for water producers in the state.
Mrs Adepoju added that the state appreciates the contribution of ATWAP as alternative water provider in the state.
She emphasised that the state government has the obligation to protect the water producers businesses, adding that the association must first do the right thing by obeying all laid down regulations.
“We want to work with you as a government, we want you to also work with us as an association and not as individuals in fighting the unwholesome practices of some water producers in the state and in ridding the industry of quacks,” she said.
Adepoju noted that she cannot down play the importance of belonging to an association and the need to meet up with standards set by the government.
Speaking during the stakeholders meeting, Mrs Chinwe Ativie observed that the regulation of the water industry is a huge task due mainly to the number of producers involved.
.
Ativie noted that ATWAP has decided to compliment the efforts of the commission to sanitise the industry.
The ATWAP President pleaded with the commission to give the association time to sweep and clean its house before sanctions can be enforced.
She observed that government alone cannot adequately supply the required quantity of drinkable water needed for Lagosians, adding that this is where ATWAP bridge the gap.
According to her: Water is much more than its price. It has enormous and complex value to life, households, food, culture, health, education, economy, boundaries and the integrity of our natural environment. The human body is made up of 75 per cent water hence our slogan.
She explained that table water production has grown to become a big industry and
ATWAP has for the past 22 years been in the forefront of ensuring that wholesome water which is life is given to the populace through its standardise packaged water and most times delivering to their door step.
ATWAP President stated further that: “We the Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) have decided to compliment the effort of the regulatory agencies by supporting The Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission In their resolve to leaving no stone unturned in making sure that Lagosians are given wholesome water”.
