The director general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Capt. Musa Nuhu has disclosed that only operating and functional airlines will benefit from the proposed N27 billion federal government palliatives for the country’s aviation industry.
Speaking today, Wednesday September 16th at the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents, LAAC, Gateway Webinar Forum in Lagos, Captain Nuhu stated that though every operator in the industry is at liberty to apply, but such airline must meet the stipulated guidelines to benefit from the palliatives.
The NCAA DG stated further that the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, will also not allow non operating airlines to benefit from the intervention fund for the aviation industry.
Nuhu said even the AON has their guidelines on airlines that can benefit from such palliatives.
It will be recalled that minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika had announced a N27 billion naira stimulus package for the aviation sector following the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry.
According to him: “Any airline can apply, whether functioning or not but it is a policy that participating airlines must be functioning and with an Air Operators Certificate. I also believe that the AON has its own rules and they know the criteria, I believe the AON will not put forward a non- functioning airline to benefit from the intervention fund.”
He decried the situation where indigenous carriers will single-handedly negotiate their flight operations into foreign countries without carrying the NCAA, the Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Embassies along only to return and complain of exploitative charges on those routes.
Nuhu promised that NCAA will protect Nigerian airlines from international Aeropolitics and exploitation.
NCAA boss said the country will reciprocate any charges on airlines from any country that exploit Nigerian airlines.
In his words: ”The airlines should always carry the NCAA, the Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian embassy in the country they are flying into along, we are here to help them grow, they should carry us along, it will be very helpful when the airlines carry the regulatory body along.
“And when they have difficulties, they should complain to us , we will sit with them and guide them and even go with them, there must be fairness from both sides”.
