Xenophobic attacks: NANTA urges Africans to embrace love as virtue
NANTA while stating its position on the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa said the recent happenings have not been a pleasant one.
The President of NANTA, Mr. Bankole Bernard while speaking on this issue said: “Initially when I saw the videos of how our people were being killed by thugs in South Africa, all I could think of was that why should Africans be destroying themselves? However, on a second thought when I took a closer look at the situation, I saw that some criminals were trying to take advantage of the system.
The association is of the opinion that these criminals must be apprehended and they should face the consequences. NANTA believes that this shouldn’t sever the relationship between the two countries.”
He noted that NANTA has a working relationship with South African Tourism (SAT) and as matter of fact they have just concluded a South African Tourism Expert Roadshow in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Lagos last week.
“The essence of this was to sensitize Nigerians on tourism plans in South Africa and how the body of the Nigerian tourism can also benefit from this and sadly, this happens, defeating the purpose of the roadshow.
“Our focus should be on the gain of the continent and not make others take advantage of the developmental growth of this continent. We call on South African Government to profer a lasting solution to this situation. Tourism preaches peace and violence should not be allowed,” Mr. Bernard added.
NANTA president also commended Air Peace, one of the domestic carriers in Nigeria for volunteering to bring back Nigerians in South Africa who are stranded.
He also commended the Government of Nigeria for granting the airline the permission to do so.
Bernard said: “The association sympathizes with the families and friends of the victims and we hope that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.”
