Court sentences student caught with 108 cough syrups to 9 months
Adjourns cocaine planting case to June 15
Justice Zainab Abubakar of the Federal High Court Kano has sentenced a 400 level student of Geology, Mudasir Sani Umar to nine months imprisonment for dealing in 108 bottles of cough syrups containing codeine.
The case involving Mrs Joy Ogundare who was allegedly caught planting cocaine in a pastor’s house was however adjourned to June 15, 2016 at the instance of the defence.
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar said that cough syrup with codeine is one of the drugs of abuse in the State. “We are working hard to prevent the abuse of cough syrup with codeine and other substances in the State by youths and women. The command is partnering with relevant stakeholders to create awareness so as to reduce cases of substance abuse” Hamza stated.
Mudasir was arrested with 108 bottles of cough syrups with codeine weighing 28kg packed in two laptop bags during routine search by NDLEA motorised patrol team along Kano Zaria road. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months imprisonment. The convict, obviously had been given a second opportunity to turn a new leaf and complete his Bachelor’s degree in Geology.
Meanwhile, NDLEA counsel barrister Waji Iliya had produced witnesses in court for cross examination in the case of cocaine planting but the defence counsel, barrister Bashir Sale told the court that he needed time to study the case. Justice Zainab then adjourned the case to June 15, 2016 while the accused is still in prison custody.
NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) has ordered the prosecution to perfect all angles to the case and ensure victory at the end of the day. “This is a very important case and we are doing everything possible to win. It will serve as a lesson to others that the law of retribution still exists. I have directed the prosecuting directorate to take all precautionary measures in ensuring victory” Abdallah stated.
Kano State Commander who expressed optimism about the outcome of the case said that the command is working to eradicate the traffic and use of narcotic drugs.
NDLEA officials arrested the accused, Mrs Joy Ogundare of Freetown Street, Sabongeri, Kano for attempting to plant 2.2 grammes of cocaine in the apartment of Pastor Richard Ekenna. Investigation revealed that the duo have a pending civil case at the magistrate court Kano.
