Ethiopian Airlines plans second frequency to Lagos, set to connect city to US
The management of Ethiopian Airlines has disclosed plans by the airline for a second frequency to Lagos and also plans to connect Lagos across the Atlantic to the United States.
According to the airline, these plans are subject to the approval of Nigerian government.
Disclosing this to Nigeria Aviation Journalists in a recent interview at the Airline’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the managing director of International Services of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr. Esayas WoldeMariam Hailu, stated that the airline flies to four gateways into Nigeria, Kano, Abuja, Enugu and Lagos in order to give the best value proposition to their loyal customers.
He explained that: “This is because other people use to drive or fly from other parts of the country to Lagos, so we have to go to their door steps to carry them now. Secondly, Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos has a very big number of passengers, so parking space, slots, arrival and departure, embarking and disembarking passengers are becoming too problematic. So to reduce the burden, of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, it Is good to diversify the traffic to everywhere and those people coming from there, will be more convenient when we airlift them from there, it is also a good service for them and by so doing, we are dispensing justice to all the geo-political zones of Nigeria”.
He explained further that the airline use to fly to Kaduna before, but suspended the operations due to economic reasons.
Esayas Hailu woldemariam noted that : “We used to fly to Kaduna, we flew to Kaduna for three years, and then, the traffic volumes has not been forth coming, we have been developing it even at a cost, we have spent lot of cost to develop it, but because it is in-between Kano and Abuja and we fly to both of the two places, the economic sense has not been guaranteed, we have to suspend it for the time being, but whenever the economics is justified, definitely we are going to go back there”.
The ET MD expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government, the public, travellers and media for standing by their side at the moment of the airline’s accident.
He said: “We have a lot of respect for Nigeria, for the Nigeria Government, public, travellers and media because they have been standing by our side at the moment of the accident. The strength of alliance within the continent was really superb and we thank you for that”.
