United Airlines pledges to train 10 young Nigeria’s female aviators to become pilots
United Airlines has pledged to train young Nigeria’s female aviators who want to make a career in aviation to become pilots.
Speaking in Lagos on Wednesday during its launch and briefing, Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President International Network Planning and Alliances stated that the airline is looking at training 10 individuals.
“We going to be making an announcement in a foreseeable future at partnering up and training young Nigerian females, bringing them to United States to get some trainings with United Airlines, so they will have a legal and better opportunity to fly aircraft. We are looking at 10 individuals,” Quayle said.
He observed that United is excited to be back in Nigeria, which is a great opportunity to have new service from Washington DC – Lagos and from Lagos back to Washington DC.
Commenting on what led the airline to pull out of Nigeria five years ago, Quayle explained that he cannot speak on what happened to United five years as he wasn’t at United five years ago.
He said: “But I can tell you that this is a new different company, a new modern company, we got the best aircraft in the market, the 787 model with the best products out there. So am excited about being in the Nigerian market, am convinced this will be a success, we will have a long partnership with Nigeria .”
He added that United is excited about competition, stressing that the airline has the best products in the market which ha won numerous awards.
We are confident that once Nigerian consumers get access to these products, they are going to love flying United Airlines and they will love our new service, he said.
On fund repatriation, Quayle explained that: “We are looking to have a good relationship with the Nigerian government and we are looking to be able to repatriate the money that we make here in Nigeria, i am confident that we can work together and find a good solution”.
In her remarks earlier, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard lauded the resumption of flight operations by by United Airlines, saying it will bring in more tax revenue to Nigeria.
Beth Leonard said the US is working closely with Nigerian aviation industry.

Speaking also, Claire Pierangelo, U.S. Consul General in Nigeria stated that the resumption of flight by United brings every American one step closer home from Nigeria.
Claire Pierangelo said Nigeria has established herself as a leading hub in West Africa.
She expressed optimism that United will be able to increase the three times weekly flights.
